Job Description

ICRISAT seeks applications for Scientist- Seed Systems position to undertake seed systems research and develop scaling-up strategies for new nutrient dense, climate-smart, farmer- and market-preferred varieties of legumes and cereals and allied technologies in WCA. The position is based at ICRISAT, Bamako, Mali.

Position Overview:

This role is responsible for to undertake seed systems research and develop scaling-up strategies for new nutrient dense, climate-smart, farmer- and market-preferred varieties of legumes and cereals and allied technologies in West and Central Africa.

Job responsibilities:

  • Develop and promote of innovative and transformative models for accessing, multiplying and disseminating public-bred varieties of mandate cereal and legume crops by capacitating seed enterprises to scale up production.
  • Develop and test innovative models for production of breeder, foundation, certified and QDS seed through demand-led public and private partnerships.
  • Develop and test innovative models of delivery of quality seed of improved varieties including bundling with complementary technologies and services to enhance commercialization and uptake of improved varieties and profitability of seed entrepreneurs.
  • Leading and contributing to development of research project proposals with collective efforts for resource mobilization
  • Engage partners in developing and disseminating business plans, variety business cases and demand forecast to enhance wider variety commercialization by SMEs and seed companies through crop portfolio diversification.

  • Engage partners in developing and disseminating user-friendly tools on profitability of different classes of seed and varieties and complementary technologies.
  • Establish and strengthen partnerships to institutionalize and operationalize digital seed roadmaps responsive to commodity market
  • Leverage client-oriented channels to create awareness and generate demand for good quality seed.
  • Mentor and backstop partners in executing seed systems activities and empower them to achieve project milestones
  • Develop capacities of stakeholders along seed systems value chain on efficient and effective quality seed production and delivery with upstream linkages to EGS and downstream linkages to grain demand
  • Establish and strengthen multi-stakeholder seed systems innovation platforms for efficient linkages of actors along the seed value chain
  • Disseminate new research knowledge through scientific writing, reports, policy briefs
  • Essential Criteria:

  • Ph. D in Seed Technology or related agricultural field with 5 years’ research and development experience in the seed sector
  • Demonstrated skills in seed sector development and facilitation of public private partnerships
  • Ability to work in multi-stakeholder, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams and processes
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and good track record of publications
  • Excellent working knowledge of standard statistical software and electronic communication
  • Aptitude and skills to formulate projects strong track record of resource mobilization
  • General:
