Job Description

ICRISAT seeks applications for the post of Farming Systems Scientist. A talented and dedicated farming systems scientist is sought to lead ICRISATs work in climate adaptation, scaling climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices and seek to support risk management through enhanced prediction of climate impacts on agriculture, and enhanced climate information and services. The person will be based at ICRISAT Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The incumbent will report to the Theme Leader of SACSA (Systems Analysis for Climate Smart Agriculture), under the research program, Innovation Systems for the Drylands, and administratively to the ESA Regional Director.

Position description: Provide scientific leadership for research into climate change adaptation and building resilience among smallholder farmers in the semi-arid tropics of sub-Saharan Africa. The person will possess good interpersonal skills and contribute to ICRISATs resource mobilization efforts through the development of research proposals. Specifically:
Conduct research on weather and climate dynamics and their association with the performance of agricultural interventions.
Develop methods to target farm and landscape interventions for managing weather and climate stress under uncertainty and develop climate applications linked to digital agriculture that can bring decision support to farmers at scale.
Undertake on-farm, on-station field based research that support the development, demonstration and scaling of climate smart agricultural interventions.
Facilitate linkages among farmers, government research and extension, NGO/s, private sector, and the development of functioning innovation platforms to build upon national capacity and incorporate globally recognized innovations into climate service products in the region.
Coordinate and foster synergies, interactions and communication with all key partners and stakeholders, to enable the delivery of climate services for agricultural and food security decision-making, including smallholder farmers.
Document research and innovations, and advance knowledge and publish research on relevant communication and/or institutional aspects of climate services, in the context of existing climate services projects and share research findings at relevant platforms.
Support the development of M&E framework to assess impact of climate services for farmers & oversight of evaluation activities on the ground.
The Person:
Essential
PhD in Agriculture (Crop and Soil Sciences, Agronomy) or Agro-meteorology with at least 3 years post-Ph.D. experience, including work on relevant aspects of climate services or climate adaptation for smallholder agriculture.
Demonstrated expertise in research and implementation of climate services for agriculture, potentially including communications and institutional aspects.
Demonstrated expertise in implementing, monitoring and analyzing agronomic trials.
Demonstrated capabilities in project or program management, including: supervision of project-based personnel, ensuring collaboration and coordination of project activities among partners, monitoring managing project resources, and reporting project results.
Very strong analytical skills, with knowledge of GIS/remote sensing and crop modelling and the use of common statistical software packages, including climate analysis packages (e.g. Instat, SPSS, SAS, STATA, Genstat).
Strong organizational skills, client orientation and communication skills, and an ability to work effectively in multicultural and multidisciplinary teams.
The ability to build relationships with donors, governments and NGOs. Demonstrated expertise in research and implementation of climate services for agriculture, potentially including communications and institutional aspects.
Good publication record, as evidenced by senior authored research papers in refereed journals.

Desirable
Demonstrated ability to write proposals and fund raise.
Experience in participatory action research with farming communities in southern Africa.

This is an internationally recruited staff (IRS) position for three years with an attractive and competitive salary and benefits package payable in US dollars.
